I started mentoring students at UC Davis through my research on bat diets and wetland communities (left). Students received hands-on, paid training in field sampling, molecular laboratory methods, and eDNA bioinformatics. They developed technical and analytical skills, and several students went on to develop their own research projects. You can read about Shayan’s experience as an undergraduate researcher in this article published in UC Davis Magazine.

My classroom experience includes invertebrate zoology, fish biology and conservation, marine ecology, and justice-oriented approaches to science. I especially enjoy planning and leading experiential learning, both in the field and in the lab. I’ve designed, led, and supported activities like intertidal transect work, plankton sampling, water quality measurements, dissections, and molecular lab work like DNA extraction and PCR amplification.
